One of my first cars was a '63 Dodge Dart.
Ugliest car this side of hell! But it ran good and the heater worked.
In no particular order before I got married and had to straighten up.
'71 Ford LTD, '61 Ford Truck,
'67 Dodge Monaco-a giant of a boat
bought for $175, put a carb on it and ran fine
'69 Chevy Truck, '71 Ford Torino, '85 Ford Ranger
Here's a pick off that dart, mine did not look this good.
It was rusted so bad that if you went through a puddle,
water would come through the floor boards.

I drive a Scion xD. I haven't had any problems with it, it's been entirely reliable and surprisingly utilitarian for its size... and it's nearly paid off!

My next vehicles will likely be some sort of a larger vehicle for family and cargo, e.g. minivan, then a compact or sedan, and an el cheapo beater of some sort -- only concerned about how it runs there.

I'd like to get something like 4wd posted there -- an older, reliable jeep-style/4wd.

Whatever it ends up, I'll get 'em all used.

It was actually called a slant 6, but it was straight, not a V6.
A very strong motor, I had to replace the distributor, and it ran great.

I liked the '61 Ford Truck too, but the worm gear went out on it.
Pretty dangerous since that is part of what controls the steering.
I had to turn the steering wheel around 1.5 to 2 times for it to catch.

Because interest rates are at a record low, we bought a 2013 Ford Taurus in November. It's the most enjoyable car to drive I've ever owned, though I've mainly had sports cars for the past 20 years.

As others note, the problem with car ownership is the cost -- of taxes, licensing, INSURANCE! (ripoff!), high cost of gas, tires, and yes, maintenance. Unless you have cash to burn, get the most reliable car you can afford, viz., a Honda, Toyota, or something else that's nice and boring. You'll thank yourself every month once it's paid off. Just make sure to take it in once a year and have it diagnosed and serviced.

That is does! The "Sport" function makes the engine rev like a mofo, only issue I see so far, is it if fcuking THIRSTY (It eats petrol like a sonuvabitch), had it 3 days, done...maybe 100miles, spent £50 on fuel lol - Although, a lot of that has been stop/start driving helping my mum move house. Not had a chance to really drive economically yet, but I am told it will do around 40mpg (atm the car is telling me I am doing 14.2 on average) - Fuel here is £1.42/Liter (UK) - So, shit gets real expensive real quick.

Oh, Found out today it came with factory fitted alarm...I put the dog in the boot, and locked the car to go get something from the house, next thing I know, alarm went off, scared the hell out of the poor dog, AND confused me cause I actually didn't know how the hell to turn it off lol.

A decent tune up and some work on a used car can make a WORLD of difference. Again, going to the better value thingy.

But yeah, it's nice to drive a new car that is fresh off the lot. Kind of seems like that whole thing about virginity and all that. (The sex metaphor MUST come into the discussion at some point -- we're talking about cars after all!

) Same thing goes for hopping off the gondola and hitting the slopes early in the morning and skiing on virgin snow - it's just so much nicer than compacted snow and granulated ice. New is always special.

We own a dark blue Ford Focus. Seems reliable, and it's comfortable to drive.

No need to post a picture. Just drive around for 5 minutes and you'll see two or three just like ours.

Not my car but the same model:

Peugeot 207SW turbo diesel.

Great mileage - cheap road tax (in the UK only £30 a year).

Bought it to replace a Citroen Xsara (also a turbo diesel - 10 years old and ran like a dream) I killed in a flood - loved that car. It looked like this:

Actually I love the Peugeot - comfortable ride, SW back so flat for loading heavy boxes for work etc.. Relatively small engine but accelerates well.

I don't know what the availability of diesel is like in the US (probably a PITA like Canada) but you get a hell of a lot more miles to the buck! Peugeot make the best diesel engines in the world (which is why Ford and Citroen use them in their cars too).

Those Taurus's are S W E E T too. I was watching the commercial for the new Taurus SHO that pumps out around 405 hp from the showroom floor. Totally awesome car. I came close to buying one myself, but I opted for a car with a little better gas mileage.

Where I live, regular gasoline is averaging about $4.01 this week whereas diesel is running around $4.36. Looks like the US oil companies noticed the increased mileage and adjusted their price for diesel fuel accordingly.

It's more expensive in the UK but nevertheless it is still cheaper in terms of mileage.

My Peuoget is costing me between 10p and 11p per mile (unless the weather is really bad when the cost goes up for all vehicles) to run but my partner has a much smaller petrol car (considered to be so fuel efficient the government gave her a subsidy to buy it) and yet it costs her between 14p and 15p a mile to drive.

It is just a fact of life that a good fuel efficient diesel will give you a lot more miles to the litre/gallon than an efficient petrol engine (unless you are prepared to drive a two seat Smart Ka) - so even with the price differential it is still considerably cheaper to drive diesel.

I presume those prices are per US gallon? That works out at $1.15 per litre for diesel - in the UK that would cost £1.46 per litre (ie. $2.22 US) which is why I am paranoid about getting the best mileage I can.

At the end of the day all cars cost a fortune - a good rule of thumb is that the total cost of running a car is about twice the cost of the fuel you put in it (at least in the UK) - so with price differentials it looks like in the US it would be more like 3 times the cost of the fuel. That is assuming you don't buy a clapped out old banger that costs a fortune to keep running at all.

If I lived/worked in a city with decent public transport I would just hire a car when I needed to - a lot cheaper - and use public transport. Unfortunately in the area I live public transport is completely impractical unless you are retired or not working and able to plan your day around the infrequent buses.

On fuel efficiency, it is illegal to produce fuel efficient cars for the US market. I'm not sure what the penalties are though.

So, the same car you get in Europe is roughly twice as fuel efficient. Or a heck of a lot more efficient anyways.

Actually there is a simple solution for the US government - put up fuel taxes (like they have done in most of the developed world) so that if you drive efficient cars the overall tax take is the same. In the short term they would make a huge windfall - in the long term people would buy fuel efficient cars - everyone wins!

Guys, maybe I am not looking at the fuel consumption properly but a liter and a gallon are not equal. 1 gallon=3.7541 liters. But I cannot get get my head wrapped around the mpg differences shown in Carol's VW comparisons.

This was discussed here before though - my response at the time is still valid:

If he knows the engine is made in US but not allowed in the US, it does look like there's something funny going on.

This autocar.co.uk review gives it 800miles to a 70 litre fill which works out at 43 m.p.g. if my maths is correct.

I actually came across this last week somewhere, and just found it again:

I think this article is mainly about the fact that if you drive about 55 mph you can save up to 23% fuel. Also here. They do use a different model (6 gears) - but the second link says that the previous record was by the model the guy in the video was talking about...

I think it's a cultural thing, in every country there is some-thing that the people wont accept, that will push them over the edge.
